(The following article is taken from the Wisconsin Christian News: The sexes and sexual orientation )
The Bible as our guide: The Bible says “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” II Timothy 3:16 The Bible is the inspired word of God and therefore it will serve as our guide in this discussion.
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. Do not conform to the pattern of this world.” Romans 12: 1-2
Within mankind, there are only 2 sexes. If you have a penis, when you are born, you are a male and if you have a vagina when you are born, you are a female (whether you want to be or not).
The real debate: The real debate is about sexual orientation and can we be born with different kinds and what is acceptable to God. In other words, when it comes to sexual relations is one attracted to the opposite sex or the same sex or for that matter, even other attractions. Now if the question was just "are men and women tempted about any and all types of sexual relations", then the answer is simply, yes.
Having a proper understanding and respect for what is proper sexual behavior is illustrated in these passages: “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.” I Corinthians 6:18 “But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality or of any kind of impurity because these are improper for God’s holy people.” Ephesians 5:3
What is clear: It is abundantly clear in scripture and in science and in nature that it is natural for a male to be attracted to a female and vice versa, but what about the other “sexual orientations” and what is sin within the sexual realm? This is not for me to say but rather I am telling you what the Bible (God’s word) says about this matter. “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”Genesis 1:27–28 “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24 In Matthew 19: 3-5, Jesus repeated the 2 scriptures from above when some Pharisees came to him to test him and in so doing He confirmed the authority of Old Testament scripture.
Examine ourselves: There are many prohibited sexual acts listed in the book of Leviticus and the majority of them speak directly to sexual behavior between a man and a woman. These point to the fact that sexual relations are principally considered as activity between a man and a woman. There are many sexual activities that each of us may want to examine ourselves about. Refer to Leviticus, chapter 18 for starters.
Do not be deceived: Concerning the question of sexual orientation, here are some of the other prohibited activities not related to a man with a woman: “Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.” Leviticus 18:22 “If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable.” Leviticus 20:13 “ Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another.
Men committed shameful acts with other men.” Romans 1:24-27 “Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men will inherit the kingdom of God.” I Corinthians 6:9-10
It certainly appears that the Bible indicates that men having sexual relations with men or women having sexual relations with women are unnatural and inappropriate behaviors (sin). Now, nowhere did any of these verses say anything about orientation, but it would seem that if you are so orientated, it is still a sin to act it out.
Eternal fire: The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is often brought into this discussion. What was the sin of the people of these cities? The Bible says “Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.” Genesis 13:13 & 18:20 “Before they (2 Angles in Lot’s house) had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom surrounded the house. They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.” Genesis 19:4-5 “The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them!” (Isaiah 3:9) “And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: They commit adultery and live a lie. They are all like Sodom to me;” Jeremiah 23:14 “Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.” Ezekiel 16:49 “In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.” Jude 1:7
It is clear that sexual immorality was one of their sins and some of this being men having sexual relations with other men. But it was more than this, it was without consent and also the sins of arrogance, over-eating, being unconcerned for others and they PARADED their sin PRIDEFULLY– they showed no shame. The parading of homosexuality and the encouraging of others, especially our children could well be the greater sin.
Nuts & Bolts: Man has created nuts and bolts, fashioned after the concept of male and female and many common items operate and are referred to similarly. We see the connection so clear with man-made objects. You don’t try to fasten anything with a bolt to a bolt. It doesn’t work and if you do it somehow, you don’t have the intended strength or bonding properties. Similarly you don’t try to attach a nut to a nut – it doesn’t work. When it comes to sexual acts, anything other than a man with a woman, is an imitation of a man with a woman.
There is more to consider that I won’t try to cover in this writing and there is room for much compassion. Galatians tells us “ But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” I recommend a review of Galatians chapter 5 and of the other Bible references, given.
May the Holy Spirit of God convict each of us in these matters and lead us to clear understanding and obedience for the praise and honor of God.
